Why a Bigger Objective Lens Stops Helping After Your Mid-Forties
Exit pupil is objective diameter divided by magnification, and it stops paying you back the instant it gets wider than your own dark-adapted pupil. A hunter in his twenties dilates to roughly 7mm and can use every millimetre an 8x56 throws; a hunter in his fifties dilates to around 5.5mm and spills the rest onto his iris. Past the mid-forties, better glass and a tripod buy more last light than a bigger front lens does.
For a hunter under about 40, an 8x42 or a 10x50 hands your eye everything it can take at last light. For a hunter over about 50, anything with an exit pupil above roughly 5.5mm is delivering a beam of light wider than the hole it has to go through, and the surplus lands on your iris.
That is the entire argument, and it takes one division to settle. Objective diameter divided by magnification gives you the exit pupil in millimetres: the diameter of the little disc of light hovering behind each eyepiece. Hold a binocular at arm's length against a bright sky and you can see them, two small bright circles floating in the eyepieces. Measure one with a ruler and you have the number.
Your own pupil is the second number, and it is the one nobody sells you. It shrinks with age, it never reaches its full stated maximum at legal shooting light anyway, and once your pupil is smaller than the exit pupil, every extra millimetre of front glass you paid for and carried is doing nothing except making the binocular heavier and harder to hold still. Weight and shake cost you animals. That is why the Last-Light Index penalises glass you cannot hold at the end of a six-hour sit.
The one division that settles it
An 8x42 gives 5.25mm. A 10x42 gives 4.2mm. A 10x50 gives 5.0mm, an 8x56 gives 7.0mm, and a 15x56 gives 3.73mm despite that huge front end, because 15x eats the aperture faster than 56mm can supply it.
The number to hold onto is this: brightness on your retina is set by area, not diameter. Halving the exit pupil quarters the light. So the difference between a 4.2mm and a 5.25mm exit pupil is not a 25% improvement, it is closer to 56% more light reaching a fully open pupil. That is a genuinely large jump, and it is why 8x42 beats 10x42 in the last twenty minutes for most people even though the specs look almost identical on a shelf.
But it only holds while your pupil is open wide enough to accept it.
Your pupil stops growing before the glass does
Maximum dark-adapted pupil diameter runs around 7mm in the twenties and falls roughly half a millimetre per decade after that, landing near 5mm by the sixties. Individual variation is large. Two 52-year-olds can be a full millimetre apart, and there is no way to know which one you are without checking.
Two corrections matter before you read the table. First, legal shooting light is not darkness. At thirty minutes after sunset under partial cloud your pupil is typically running 1 to 1.5mm below its full dark-adapted maximum, so the age figures below are generous. Second, if you are glassing east with the last of the western sky behind you, or across snow, your pupil closes further still.
Read the table for your decade and find the row where the wasted column first shows a number. That configuration is the ceiling worth carrying.

Everything below that line is weight you carry for light your eye cannot accept. Put it in terms of glass you would actually shop for. A 55-year-old with a 5.5mm pupil looking through an 8x56 is receiving exactly the retinal brightness of a 5.5mm exit pupil, which at 8x means a 44mm objective. He is carrying a two-and-a-half pound binocular to get the last-light performance of an 8x44. The 8x42 in the other case weighs a pound and a half less and gives him 5.25mm.
The same hunter at 10x is worse off. To feed a 5.5mm pupil at 10x you need a 55mm objective, and to feed it at 12x you need 66mm, which nobody makes as a handheld. This is the real reason 8x wins low-light arguments: at any given weight it is the magnification that keeps the beam wide.
Twilight factor ranks binoculars, it does not predict them
Twilight factor is the square root of magnification multiplied by objective diameter. It exists because at low light your eye is resolution-limited as well as photon-limited, so magnification genuinely helps you pick a bedded animal out of sagebrush even when it is not helping brightness.
Treat it as a ranking of detail-at-distance in poor light, nothing more. It assumes perfect transmission, it ignores glass quality entirely, and it rewards magnification without asking whether you can hold that magnification steady while shivering.

Notice how the two tables disagree. The 15x56 tops the twilight-factor ranking and sits near the bottom on exit pupil. That is not a contradiction, it is the whole point: it resolves brilliantly on a tripod at 3pm and goes dark in your hands at 8pm.
Transmission is the missing term in both tables. Good hunting glass with modern coatings passes somewhere in the high eighties to low nineties percent of the light that enters it. Cheap glass can sit in the seventies. A 10x42 at 90% transmission puts more light on your retina than a 10x50 at 72%, and no spec on the box will tell you that.
The thirty minutes that decide the season
Most states set legal light at thirty minutes before sunrise to thirty minutes after sunset, with a handful running to sunrise and sunset flat and a few extending further. Check your regulations, because everything on this page is aimed at that specific window.
Inside those thirty minutes the light drops fast and non-linearly. The first ten minutes after sunset are still bright enough that a mediocre binocular works fine. The last ten are where the difference between 4.2mm and 5.25mm of exit pupil turns a grey shape into an identified animal, and where the difference between 88% and 75% transmission does the same.
Under heavy overcast that window compresses. Under clear sky with snow on the ground it stretches, sometimes by ten minutes. Rain kills it early because water on the objective scatters everything.
Decision tree: how much objective to carry
Work down this list and stop at the first branch that describes your hunt.
- Hunting timber, hardwoods or anything where most sightings are inside 150 yards: 8x32 or 8x42. The 32 saves eight ounces and a lot of neck. Stop here.
- Sitting a stand or blind and the last thirty minutes is when you expect the shot, and you are under 45: 8x42, or 8x50 if you can accept the weight. A chest harness makes the 50 tolerable.
- Same sit, but you are over 50: 8x42, and spend the saved money on transmission and coatings rather than aperture. A 5.25mm exit pupil already exceeds what you will dilate to at legal light.
- Open country, glassing across a drainage, animals expected past 400 yards: 10x42 handheld and a tripod-mounted 12x50 or 15x56 for the grid work. Two tools, not one compromise.
- Backpack hunt where every ounce is argued: 10x32 on a tripod adapter. You lose last-light brightness and get it back by having the glass steady enough to hold on one spot for four minutes.
- You already own the binocular and you are only deciding whether to buy bigger: if the exit pupil of what you own already matches or exceeds your age row, buying bigger will change nothing. Buy a tripod instead.
That last branch is the one that saves people the most money and it is the one nobody wants to hear. A steady 8x42 on a tripod out-detects a shaking 10x50 by a wide margin at last light, because detection at low light is about holding a patch of hillside still long enough for your eye to integrate what is in it.
Where this stops holding
The exit pupil ceiling is a genuine physical limit, but it is not the only thing happening in your eye, and there are four situations where the age table above misleads.
- Astigmatism. An uncorrected astigmatic eye actually performs better with a smaller exit pupil, because the narrow beam only uses the centre of your cornea. Some hunters over 50 genuinely see more detail through a 10x42 than an 8x42 at last light for exactly this reason.
- Cataract or early lens clouding. Scatter inside the eye means a wide beam produces glare rather than detail. Smaller exit pupil, better contrast.
- Daylight glassing. During the day your pupil is at 2 to 3mm and exit pupil is irrelevant to brightness. Magnification and glass quality decide everything, which is why 12x and 15x dominate open-country daytime work.
- Head position. If your eye is not centred on the exit pupil you lose the outer edge of it anyway. A binocular with a 5.25mm exit pupil that you cannot hold your eye behind squarely is delivering less than a 4.2mm one you can.
Testing your own ceiling before you spend
Ask an optometrist to measure your dark-adapted pupil. Most have a pupillometer sitting in the room and it takes about a minute. That single number, yours rather than the decade average, tells you exactly which row of the first table applies.
Failing that, the cheap version: sit in a dark room for fifteen minutes, then have someone photograph your eye with a dim red light and a ruler held against your cheekbone in the same plane. It is rough, but rough beats guessing by a millimetre and a half.
Then do the honest field test. Take two binoculars to the same ridge on the same evening, glass the same patch of hillside, and time the moment each one stops giving you enough to identify an animal. Do it twice. If the heavier one is not buying you at least four or five extra minutes, it is not buying you anything you will use, and every ounce of it counts against you on hour six of the sit.
