Deer Shot Placement by Angle: Quartering-To, Quartering-Away and Treestand Geometry
The aiming point on a deer moves with body angle and with the height you're shooting from, and the broadside diagram everyone learns is only correct for one of the nine situations you'll actually face. Reference the near front leg, not the shoulder, because the leg line scales and the shoulder doesn't. From 20 feet up, quartering-to and head-on both go from marginal to pass.
There is one aiming point on a broadside deer and everybody knows it: tight behind the near front leg, a third of the way up from the brisket. That point is correct for a deer standing square to you on level ground, and wrong for almost everything else.
Turn the animal thirty degrees away and the entry moves back and the exit moves forward. Turn it thirty degrees toward you and the near scapula slides across the front of the lungs like a door closing. Climb twenty feet up a tree and the line that used to cross both lungs now enters high, drops five inches on its way through the chest, and exits under the off-side leg with one lung clipped and a blood trail you'll be on your knees looking for.
None of that is opinion. It's the shape of a deer and a bit of trigonometry, and it's all below.
What the broadside decal leaves out
Take a mature northern whitetail buck, 190 pounds on the hoof. Chest depth from brisket to the top of the spine runs about 17 inches. Body width through the ribs is about 10 inches. The lung field is roughly 10 inches tall and 10 inches long in profile, and the high-percentage part of it — where both lungs overlap and the great vessels sit — is closer to an 8-inch circle than the dinner plate on the practice target.
The heart is lower and further forward than the decal suggests. It sits in the bottom third of the chest, directly above and slightly behind the elbow, and about a third of it tucks behind the humerus.
The other thing the decal hides is the diaphragm. It doesn't run vertically. It slopes forward from the spine down toward the sternum, which means a shot that looks like it's in the back of the lung field from behind the animal has already crossed into liver, and a shot four inches further back is in the paunch. The margin for error is not symmetrical: two inches forward costs you a scapula, four inches back costs you eight hours of waiting.
The near-leg line, and why it doesn't lie
Stop aiming behind the shoulder. Start aiming off the near front leg.
The vertical line up the back edge of the near front leg is a hard reference that works on every angle, every species, and every body size, because the leg is attached to the chest in a fixed relationship to the lungs and heart. A buck's shoulder, by contrast, is a mass of hair, muscle and hide whose visual edge moves depending on whether he's standing square, stretching to feed, or has one leg forward.
The rule, stated with its conditions attached: on a broadside animal, put it on the leg line or two inches behind it, one third of chest depth up from the brisket. On a 17-inch-deep whitetail that's about six inches above the bottom line of the chest. On a 30-inch-deep bull elk, the same rule gives you ten inches. Same rule, different animal, no mental conversion.
For every non-broadside angle, the aiming point is described below as an offset from that leg line, forward or back. That's the only geometry you need to hold in your head with a deer at 24 yards and your heart at 140.
Aiming point by body angle
The figures below are for a mature whitetail on level ground with the shooter at the same elevation. Add stand height and the numbers change, which is the next section. Tissue depth is entry-to-exit along the aiming line and is anatomy only — whether your setup will make that distance is a projectile question and it isn't answered here.

If heavy bone is on the line, the shot is a different decision than the aiming point alone suggests. Two of these rows carry a caveat worth reading twice. The extreme quartering-away shot puts the paunch on the line by definition, which means even a perfect execution produces a stinking mess and a gut-contaminated wound channel that still kills quickly if it reaches the off-side lung — and a slow disaster if it doesn't. And the head-on shot has a much smaller window than the silhouette implies, because an alert deer facing you has both shoulder points rolled forward, narrowing the gap between them to a few inches.
Take it or let it walk
Verdicts below are anatomy-and-geometry verdicts. TAKE means the window is genuinely there and a normal-quality shot lands in it. MARGINAL means the window exists but is small enough that ordinary field error — the deer taking a half step, a twig, your own breathing — moves you out of it. PASS means the geometry is against you and the odds do not improve by wanting it badly.
Stand heights are platform heights with a shooter standing or leaning. Distances assume 15 to 25 yards, the range band where treestand height does the most damage to the geometry.

If the cell says PASS, the correct move is to stay still and wait for the animal to change the geometry for you — which it usually does within a minute. The single most useful thing on this table is what it says about waiting. A deer that presents quartering-to at 18 yards will very often turn to quartering-away within thirty seconds, because it's walking somewhere. A hunter who takes the quartering-to shot has swapped a high-percentage shot he was about to be handed for a low-percentage one he chose.
Quartering-to, and the argument that will not die
Somebody in every deer camp takes quartering-to shots and says they work, and they're not lying. They also usually leave out the part where the animal was thirty yards away on flat ground and they were driving through the near shoulder deliberately.
The honest split is this. Quartering-to is a bone problem, not an aiming problem. The aiming point is easy to describe — the crease at the front of the near shoulder, angling back toward the off-side last rib. The question is what happens when the line meets the scapula and the humerus head, and that depends entirely on what you're shooting, which is outside this site's scope on purpose.
What this page can tell you is the geometry: at 40 degrees quartering-to, the near scapula covers roughly the forward two-thirds of the near lung, and the humerus head sits at the bottom edge of the covered area. Behind the scapula you have a wedge of unobstructed lung about four inches wide. That's the whole target. Four inches, on an animal that may move, from a platform that may sway.
So the position taken here: from a treestand, at any height, on a quartering-to animal harder than about 25 degrees, let it walk. From the ground, on level terrain, it's a different conversation and it belongs to whoever knows what your load does to a scapula.
Height does more damage than angle
Most hunters over-worry body angle and under-worry stand height, and it's the wrong way round inside twenty yards.
The mechanism is simple. Your shot line enters the near side of the chest and travels across a body that's roughly 10 inches wide. On a downward angle, it loses altitude the whole way across. The amount it loses is the body width multiplied by the tangent of the down-angle. At 20 degrees down that's about 3.6 inches. At 30 degrees it's 5.8 inches. At 40 degrees it's 8.4 inches — most of the height of the entire lung field.
Which means a shot that enters dead centre of the near lung at 40 degrees down exits below the off-side lung entirely. One lung, low exit, and the deer covers ground.
The correction is to aim higher on the near side, roughly half the calculated drop, so the line is centred through the chest rather than centred at entry. At 20 degrees that's about two inches high. At 35 degrees it's three and a half, which starts putting you uncomfortably near the spine, and that is the point at which the correct answer is not a correction but a decline.
Where these numbers stop holding
Everything above is a 17-inch-deep, 10-inch-wide mature northern whitetail. Scale it before you use it elsewhere.
A southern or Texas whitetail may run 120 pounds with a 14-inch chest depth and 8-inch width, which shrinks every window by roughly a fifth. A big mule deer buck adds two or three inches of depth and one or two of width. A bull elk roughly doubles the linear dimensions and more than triples the mass of bone in the shoulder. The near-leg rule survives all of it; the inch figures do not.
Posture matters more than most charts admit. A deer with its head down feeding has its scapula rotated forward, opening the window. A deer that is alert, head up, front feet gathered, has both scapulae rolled forward and the whole chest tightened, and it will move on the shot besides. A deer stretching to reach a branch has moved its near leg forward and its scapula with it — that's the best presentation you'll ever get and it lasts about two seconds.
Finally, an animal on a slope changes the whole picture. A deer standing below you on a sidehill increases your effective down-angle; a deer above you can reduce it to nothing or reverse it. Read the slope before you read the animal.
The ten seconds before you commit
- Find the near front leg. Not the shoulder. The leg.
- Read the body angle off the far shoulder, not the head. Deer turn their heads constantly and their bodies rarely.
- Estimate your down-angle from the stand height and the distance, then decide whether you need to hold two inches high or three and a half. If it's three and a half, that is your cue to reconsider.
- Check for the off-side leg position. If the off-side front leg is forward, your exit window is partly blocked by the humerus.
- Look at the near-side scapula edge. If you can see the seam of it in front of your aiming point, you are further quartering-to than you think.
- If the verdict table says MARGINAL and the deer is walking, wait. It's going somewhere and the geometry improves in almost every direction it can move.
