Elk vs Whitetail vs Mule Deer: Body Size, Vitals Window and Marginal Shots
A bull elk's chest is roughly twice as deep as a whitetail's and nearly twice as wide, so the aiming point sits about ten inches above the brisket rather than six, and the off-side lung is twenty inches away instead of ten. The near front leg is the one reference that scales across all three species. Elk also leave far worse blood trails than deer for reasons of hide and hair, which changes every recovery decision.
A bull elk is not a big deer. He's a different shape with a differently proportioned chest, and the whitetail picture you've been carrying since you were twelve will put your shot in the wrong place on him by four to six inches — which is enough to turn a double lung into a liver.
The core numbers: a mature northern whitetail buck runs about 17 inches from brisket to spine and 10 inches across the ribs. A big mule deer buck is around 20 by 12. A mature bull elk is 30 to 34 inches deep and 18 to 22 inches across. Every anatomical rule of thumb you learned in inches is now wrong by roughly a factor of two.
One rule survives intact, which is why it's the one worth learning. Aim off the near front leg, one third of chest depth up from the brisket. That's six inches on a whitetail and ten on a bull, and you never have to convert anything.
Why the whitetail picture fails on a bull
The specific error is almost always the same, and it is almost always backward from what you'd expect: hunters shoot elk too far back.
It happens because everybody learns to aim behind the shoulder, and on a whitetail that phrase describes a place two or three inches behind the leg. Applied to an animal whose shoulder is a foot and a half of muscle and bone across, behind the shoulder becomes a much bigger distance — and the hunter, scaling by eye against a whitetail-shaped mental image, ends up putting the shot in the last third of the rib cage. On an elk, the last third of the rib cage is liver and diaphragm.
The second scaling error is vertical. On a 17-inch whitetail chest, a two-inch mistake high or low is survivable. On a 32-inch elk chest, hunters correctly reason that the target is bigger and get sloppier, but the lung field on an elk sits proportionally higher relative to the brisket, and the bottom third of the chest is heart, sternum and a lot of nothing. Low hits on elk are common and they're the worst outcome on the list — a brisket wound on an animal that will walk over a ridge and into the next drainage.
The third is the shoulder itself. A bull's scapula is a heavy plate with a pronounced spine and a mass of muscle either side, and it covers considerably more of the forward chest than a deer's does, particularly on a quartering-to animal. September bulls add a rut-thickened neck and shoulder hide on top of that.
The animals side by side
Figures below are working ranges for mature animals in reasonable condition. The vitals window column is the high-percentage circle — the area where both lungs overlap and the great vessels sit — not the full lung profile, which is considerably bigger and considerably less forgiving at its edges.

A bull elk is four times the body mass of a whitetail buck and carries about three times the vitals area. Proportionally, the elk's window is smaller against his silhouette than the deer's is, which is the opposite of what the size difference makes you feel when he steps out at eighty yards.
The hide column matters more than it looks. Elk hair is long, hollow and dense, and it plugs entry wounds as effectively as anything in nature. Combined with a thick, loose hide that slides over the wound as the animal moves, this is why a well-hit elk frequently leaves almost no blood for the first hundred yards.
One reference that scales: the near front leg
Forget behind the shoulder. It's an unreliable phrase because the shoulder's visible edge is hair and muscle and moves with posture.
Take the vertical line up the back edge of the near front leg instead. On every one of the eight animals in that table, the front edge of the lung field sits just behind that line and the heart sits directly above the elbow. The relationship is fixed by skeletal architecture, so it holds whether you're looking at a 90-pound Coues buck in Arizona or an 800-pound bull in Idaho.
The rule, with its conditions: on a broadside animal, standing square, on ground level with you, put it on the leg line or an inch or two behind, one third of chest depth up from the brisket line. On an elk that's about ten inches up, which is roughly the height of your spread hand from thumb tip to little finger — a genuinely useful field reference at eighty yards.
Where it stops holding: a feeding animal with its head down has rotated the scapula forward, so the window opens and the aiming point can move an inch or two forward. An animal quartering in either direction requires the offset treatment rather than the leg line straight up. And a bedded animal removes the leg reference entirely, which is why bedded shots on elk are far harder than they look.
How far they run, and what they leave
Distances below assume the animal is not pushed. Push any of them and roughly double the figure, then halve the recovery odds. The blood-trail column is the one western hunters underestimate most.

An elk blood trail that would read as a marginal hit on a whitetail is often a completely normal lung hit on a bull. The other elk-specific pattern worth knowing: a hard-hit elk usually goes downhill, while a healthy spooked elk goes uphill. It isn't universal and nobody should bet a search pattern entirely on it, but when the trail runs out on a sidehill, the downhill arc is the one to grid first — and it's also the one hunters instinctively avoid because it means dragging quarters back up.
Mule deer are not big whitetails either
The anatomy is close enough that the same aiming rules transfer with a one-inch adjustment. The behaviour is not.
A mule deer that's been jumped will typically bound off, then stop and look back at somewhere between eighty and two hundred and fifty yards. A whitetail in the same situation is already gone and will not stop until it's out of the county. That single behavioural difference accounts for most of the western hunting opportunity that eastern hunters miss, because they've been trained by whitetails to assume the animal is gone and to stop watching.
Bedding is different too. Mule deer bed high with a view and the wind at their back, on shaded north slopes in warm weather, and they will sit there for eight hours watching everything below them. They're found by glassing, not by ambushing — a mule deer buck may not cross the same ground twice in a week, which makes a treestand-and-funnel approach close to useless.
And their chest is deeper relative to their leg length than a whitetail's, so the one-third-up aiming point sits visually higher on the body than the picture you're used to. Seven inches on a big buck, not six.
The marginal-shot decision, by species
Marginal means the window is there but small, or the animal is quartering, or the distance is at the edge of what you can hold. The decision changes by species, and it changes for reasons of anatomy and recovery terrain rather than nerve.
On whitetails from a stand, the cost of passing is low. Deer densities are high, seasons are long, and the same deer often comes back. Pass more than you think you should.
On mule deer in open country, the cost of passing is moderate. You'll likely get another look at the same buck the following morning if you back out cleanly, because his bedding area is a fixed thing.
On elk, the cost of passing is high — a public-land bull within range may be the only one you see in nine days — and the cost of a marginal hit is also very high, because an elk that runs into the next drainage represents a recovery that is physically beyond many hunters. Those two costs pull in opposite directions and the honest resolution is: pass anything worse than a slight quartering angle, and take a genuinely broadside or slightly quartering-away presentation without hesitation, because you may not get a second one.
The one bright line across all three: nobody should take a quartering-to shot on an elk. The scapula is on the line, the near lung is behind it, and the failure mode is a bull with a shoulder wound that walks for eleven days.
Where these figures stop holding
Everything above assumes healthy mature animals in autumn condition. A rutted-out December bull may have lost 15 percent of his body weight and looks smaller through glass than the table suggests. A pre-rut September bull carries a matted shoulder shield that adds bulk without adding vitals.
Subspecies vary more than most charts admit. Roosevelt elk are heavier-bodied and shorter-legged than Rocky Mountain elk, so the aim-height figure runs slightly lower relative to the silhouette. Tule elk are considerably smaller. Coues whitetails are small enough that whitetail figures overshoot badly, which is the entry in the table hunters get wrong most often after elk.
Terrain changes the recovery numbers more than anatomy does. Every distance in the recovery table assumes ground you can walk. In blowdown timber or steep shale, the same animal travelling the same distance can represent five times the search effort.
